Pirates always had a few or more cannons stocked up with them on their ship for either defensive or offensive motives.
There were many different types of cannons and cannonballs that each pirate used. One type of cannon that they used was called a "Swivel Gun". Swivel Guns were not used to destroy ships, but instead wanted to cause the least damage possible to the ship and more damage to the people aboard.

 The other type of cannon that pirates mainly used was a "Carronade", which was used mainly just to destroy the opponent's ship as fast as possible. Although those are just two of the main types of cannons, there are even smaller sections of cannons but just labeled with different weights. Such as a "4 pounder", or "16 pounder". Added with the heavy cannons are heavy cannonballs that were used. Pirates used many different types of cannonballs such as Round Shots, Burning Balls, Chain Shots, and Bar Shots. Round Shots were just ordinary steel or iron cannon balls that were shot out of the cannon to weaken the ship's hull. Burning Balls were created by heating up a cannonball in a sort of oven and then shot out with insane heat that could spread fire. Chain Shots were two cannonballs with a chain attached to them. They spun around in the air when fired, and were good for ruining the other ship's rigging and sails. Finally, Bar Shots were cannonballs attacked with a straight bar. Bar shots were very deadly and could break through objects very easily. |
